Victorian Lampshades were common from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Although not strictly Victorian as the name implies, they did originate in the late years of Queen Victoria's reign.  Generally, this manner of lighting, influenced by the era's ornate elegance and graceful nostalgia, belonged only to the well-to-do.  These shades were sold in high-end furniture stores and mail order catalogs.  As early as 1926, books taught ladies to create their own shades.
